Across the US with Big Adam

Tonight I stumbled on an Instagram account of a young guy who rode his bike across the US this year. His name is Adam Bigelow and he managed to post over 70 videos (one for each day on the road and a few more for context, background, etc.). He rode west to east along the Transamerica Trail, much of which I have ridden east to west.

Adam managed to ride for several days in Wyoming with a tire that was held together with some kind of tape. He broke several spokes. And ate an appalling number of cinnamon rolls (not to mention Mexican food meals). My guess is he gets about 30 miles per cinnamon roll. I now feel much better about my bike touring eating habits.

He is young and rides much faster than I do so I hate him. He also seems never to be in a truly crappy mood which makes me hate him even more.

So if you want to learn a thing or two about bike touring check his videos out.

  1. Before you lament the speed he rides at compared to you, remember: most people your (and my ) age don’t get off the couch. Think about what you do do every day in comparison to others rather than the fact you have slowed down a revolution or two. I don’t run. I don’t ride 10,000 miles a day. But people seem impressed when I tell them I walk 6 miles a day. Well, except today, in the tail end of the massive storm that has resulted in non stop rain for 24 hours. But the rain did t stop us from seeing Tony Trischka’s Christmas show last night at the Cock N Bull in Galway.

      1. I imagine you are jumping for joy this morning. You will be able to ride to Wizards and Capitals games in addition to the Nats. A Win Win for you.

      2. The Wiz and Caps arena is about the same distance as Nats Park but there is no bike valet so your bike will be gone by the second period. The neighborhood for the proposed arena development fought off attempts to locate the football or baseball stadiums there, but the area is now much different. It’s a good location for the arena but downtown will die without the Capital One Center.

      3. Did you still have a cigarette in your mouth then? Then you were at least cycling with style.

  2. Pick, you just keep on hating Adam. But know that you amaze people like me. I ride my Schwinn in my neighborhood, perhaps 3 or 4 miles. And I think I’m doing something!
